This week on Episode 127 of the #ReadswithRosaPodcast, I sit down to talanoa with the team from Pacific Islanders in Publishing, an organization that was created to amplify the many cultures and peoples across Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Prior to their launch late last year, Kanaka Maoli writer Keala Kendall, Mā’ohi writer & researcher Manuia Heinrich, and Hawaiian/Sāmoan writer Kealani Netane had already been doing a lot of work behind the scenes to promote Pacific Islanders’ books, spending more than a year compiling a database of our authors and their published works from the last 10 years. One important aspect of the database is that it allows publishing industry professionals to be able to find contacts when they are looking for certain representation.
Their website
https://www.pacificislanderbooks... also includes resources for creatives looking to break into publishing, book influencers, independent presses, and bookstores. Manuia shares that ‘the website is also about visibility, telling people that we are here and that we are writing our stories’.
Tune in to this week’s episode to hear more about the advocacy work that the #PacificIslandersinPublishing team are doing, as well as their current reads and book recommendations. Don’t forget to follow them on their socials and join their growing #discord community.
